Two Separate Cuba-Headed Aid Sailboats Declared Missing following Departing Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery mission is actively in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of lost sailing vessels carrying aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search Operations Deployed
The Mexican government has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than 9 personnel, per a military release.
The boats had been scheduled to reach Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Aid to Cuba
The island nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures multiple power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety systems and communication devices," an official associated with the mission stated.
The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is working closely with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Previous Aid Delivery
Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.
That vessel, dubbed "a new Granma" in reference to the yacht in which the revolutionary leader landed in Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Context
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the island nation came into effect.
Global bodies have since warned of "dire" lack of essential goods, with more than 50,000 surgeries cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.
Political tensions have increased in recent months, with statements from different representatives underscoring the complex situation regarding bilateral relations.
Reacting to certain comments, a senior official from Cuba declared that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces stated it was committed to using every available asset at its command to discover the boats and secure the safety of the sailors.
As of now, there has been silence on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
