Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
