The Three Lions to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Journey at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium

The England national team will initiate their UEFA Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the relatively straightforward entry for a tournament staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an England men’s match since May 2016, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win their group, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean commencing the knockouts at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Tournament Launch and Demonstration

The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday evening. High-ranking officials from European football’s governing body and the host FAs were barracked as they approached the location by approximately 50 activists, who demanded Israel’s national side to be kicked out from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were displayed with phrases stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while demonstrators shouted: “Kick Israel out.”

Event Schedule

The first match of the European Championship will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a fixture that will involve the Welsh team if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be held on a Sunday in July 2028 with a start time at 5pm.

It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for European club finals from the following campaign, will attract family audiences and help connect with a more diverse set of audiences.

Host Nations

The Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would do the same at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualifying tournament; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that do not reach the tournament through the qualification path.

Venues and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine host stadiums. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a venue city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on a date in late 2026.

Tournament Vision

“It will be a tournament for the followers and a festival of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and power to unite individuals.”

Over 3 million tickets, a all-time high for a UEFA European Championship, are anticipated to be made available to supporters.
