The Princess of Wales's Annual Festive Service of Carols Honours Charity Helpers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have helped their communities.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

A Theme of Compassion and Love

The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on the afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who founded an organisation, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a child with a terminal illness.

"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an extraordinary difference to the well-being of people," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the concert.

Carefully Paced Reappearance

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, in November making her initial major address in two years, in which she discussed recognising the "selfless, commonly overlooked efforts of carers".

Performance and Potential

Attendees entering the Abbey will be entertained by talented youth performers aided by the Future Talent charity, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of instrumental training.

Carys Wood, aged 18, who is a trumpet player and is from Wales, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "amazing" to be playing at the concert.

"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to hone their artistic talents.

A Family Affair

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will be present at the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for food banks.

Festive Decor and Performances

The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.

Taking to the stage will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "a dream come true."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be broadcast on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
