The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of October 7th incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
Israelis have assembled around the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will not present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the proposal.
A high-ranking delegate involved in the negotiations said that an night meeting of mediated discussions began at 19:00 Cairo time.
The official said the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Discussions
- A permanent halt to fighting
- The swap of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance deliveries
- Future governance of the territory
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - told: "No location seems like home any longer and until each abducted person come back not a single person will be secure."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their backing for the families of the hostages. Israel says 48 stay in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to finish in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses indicated the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"When the evening arrives, the fear comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."
Medical Situation
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the south region of the city reported another two victims had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff stated.
