The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
