The Eurovision Song Contest Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Sanitize Conflict.

An recent initialism came to light several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts such as paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to attend to a child who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government rejects these allegations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what international harmony manifests as.

Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems completely different.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it once represented. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
