The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular series reaching its finale—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no way to avoid the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “however, we remain prepared to abandon a solid concept for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?
“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
