An informant has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind confidential devices permitting the Taliban to locate local individuals who worked with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

The source, identified as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to relocate and switch their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are currently examining the UK government's management of a serious breach of private information affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had requested to come to the United Kingdom to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet with private information, such as names, addresses and occasionally family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at British military command in February 2022.

The breach became known in late 2023, when the names of several individuals who had applied to move to the UK appeared on Facebook.

Regime's Resources

It appears there is a misunderstanding that the Taliban lack similar capabilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to lawmakers.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have your phone number, they can locate your precise location. This is exactly how intelligence groups accomplished.”

During testimony about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A confirmed: “They've got everything.”

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research presented to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty family members and co-workers of individuals impacted by the leak had been murdered.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was enacted in late 2023 and prevented relevant facts regarding the matter from public disclosure until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group associated with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been breached”.

“Our suggestion was that they change residence if they could and altered their mobile numbers. Those were the two main details that, if the Taliban acquired this information, would cause identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to conclude that the possession of the dataset by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change present danger”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”

Person A described disturbing treatment experienced by affected individuals, including electrocution, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had their arms broken to try to get the family to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
