Putin Vows Continuous Crude Oil Deliveries to the Indian Nation in Defiance of US Sanctions

In a clear message to Western nations, Leader Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to provide “continuous” shipments of crude oil to India. The announcement came when Putin and Modi met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to foreign coercion.”

A Statement Directed at the Western Countries

The statement, issued after the annual summit, appeared to be a pointed rebuke at Washington, who have tried to compel New Delhi into scaling back its close links with Moscow. This comes comes after earlier American measures, such as the introduction of trade penalties targeting New Delhi over its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Moscow remains a reliable supplier of oil and gas and everything necessary for the development of India’s industry,” the Russian president stated. “We are ready to continue guaranteeing the uninterrupted supply of resources for the fast-expanding Indian economy.”

Modi, though he did not naming energy explicitly, echoed the focus by saying that “secure fuel supplies has been a robust and crucial pillar of the Indo-Russian cooperation.”

Defying US Interference

Prior to the summit, via a TV appearance, Putin had criticized US interference on India's energy purchases. Putin stated, “If the US can claim the privilege to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the identical right?”

Putin's arrival was his first journey to India since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, and both sides undertook a deliberate effort to project that the friendship between the men was undisturbed.

A Warm Reception

Employing an rare gesture, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. They embraced warmly as longtime companions before having a closed-door supper on Thursday evening.

He later described India's partnership with Russia as “a beacon” and said it was “founded on shared respect and deep trust.”

Expanding Defence and Economic Partnerships

The bilateral summit resulted in several important deals across military and economic cooperation. One significant result was the signing of an economic cooperation programme extending until 2030, which sets a goal to double bilateral trade to $100bn annually by the target year.

Additionally pledged to restructure their defence ties. Although Russia continues to be India's largest exporter of arms, this role has reduced in recent years as India works to broaden its procurement.

Their communique emphasized plans for the collaborative manufacturing of advanced defence platforms, even if specific mention of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were not made.

Ultimately, Russia and India reiterated that during the “present intricate, difficult, and unpredictable global landscape, the Indo-Russian partnership continue to be strong to external pressure.”
