Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat corruption within the police force.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
Fresh Face and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to become a offender.
Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a seventh installment."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."
Show History
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.
The conclusion of series six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for further series.
However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
