Information Available Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.
Listed are the victims who have been identified at this time.
Eli Schlanger
London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She told the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per reports citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
