Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
