India's capital Awakens to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "severe" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Various sections of the city recorded an AQI above 500, which translates to ten times the recommended level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.

Fireworks Restrictions and Recent Changes

Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the hazardous smog that covers the city as winter approaches.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected local government appealed to the highest court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and environment".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of environmental and health campaigners, the court complied with the request, specifying that green firecrackers could be set off during designated hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi registered air quality peaking around midnight to the most severe readings seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing worsening pollution levels in their urban centers on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have persisted as a major issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever measured in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Multiple Pollution Factors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and smoke from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing dangerous smog that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Financial Toll

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple research.

The contaminated air results in elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.

The pollution is projected to be accounting for ten thousand early mortalities per year in Delhi.
