More than 50 solitary minor migrants who vanished soon after coming the UK and while being looked after by government agencies are still missing, according to information gathered.

A significant number of the unaccounted minors entered in dinghies or concealed in the backs of vehicles and are believed to have been abducted by smugglers. A specific county is often the area where they initially reach.

Government Figures Shows Concerning Totals

Freedom of information records has registered 345 children disappearing from local care, with 56 of those yet to be located.

Between 2021 and 2023, when designated facilities for children functioned combined with hotels in various locations, 132 children vanished from these facilities. Among them, 108 were eventually recovered but 24 are remain unaccounted for.

From 2020 and August 2025, 213 children vanished from care facilities for this group, with 182 recovered and 32 still missing.

Nationality Breakdown of Vanished Minors

In each instance, Albanian children were the largest group to go missing, accounting for 50% the aggregate from the temporary accommodations, 68, and over 25% from the care facilities, 65.

The next most common ethnic groups to have gone missing from both places are individuals from Afghanistan followed by people from Iran.

Legal Changes and Persistent Problems

In late 2023, following a long-running judicial process involving unaccompanied minor refugees missing from all hotels, the practice of regularly housing children in hotels was ruled unlawful.

As an alternative, authorities pledged to strengthen security for these children by expanding the use of welcome hubs. Since that court ruling another 44 children have disappeared from these centres, with 10 still missing and 34 found.

"Once a child does disappear, the threat that they are being abused grows markedly and they are certainly more vulnerable to mistreatment and smuggling."

A spokesperson stated: "Every minor or young person vanishing from custody is a major worry and we take all possible measures to protect them."
