American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

Duffy added that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official stated.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule before noon.

Travel at Newark Airport, however, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The agency warned travelers in California to check with carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and about one month before the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to fly in the US.

Pressure on American aviation contributed to ending a federal closure in 2019. Back then, the shutdown had entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted several flight controllers to stay home on the identical date on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at New York's LaGuardia airport.

That same day, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the federal closure after 35 days.
