Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the company with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he will independently develop the controversial product within a personal collection showcasing causes the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement intensifies the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes and Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed that he will create other ice cream flavors that address concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company in September, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the principles that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
