Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a phone call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the symbolic importance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
