According to a new book, however, that honor belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring over three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”
Thanks to their rapid mechanical saw, that turned logs into planks with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships faster compared to any other nation, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, economic as well as artistic dominance across the continent and the world.

Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic components.”
