A Tale of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to arrange accommodation after getting there, but once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.
Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes all night. Not knowing quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and began walking near the casino, reasoning it was a place to spend those hours in an establishment that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the following day, however, being a student on a tight budget, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused since a woman spotted me loitering in downtown and asked whether I needed help. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, considering that was where my medical school interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me the significant risk she took as a young woman letting a man she’d just met stay in her room. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – but still very grateful.
I didn’t end up go to that university, and I lost touch with her again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish life has returned her act of kindness tenfold. We could all use more folks like that woman.
